Spooky Vintage Farmhouse: Giving My Farmhouse Quilt a Halloween Makeover

There’s something especially fun about taking a quilt pattern you already love and completely changing its personality with fabric.

When I first designed my Vintage Farmhouse pattern, I knew I wanted to make a Halloween version. Those little farmhouse windows were practically asking for ghosts, goblins, cats, and other spooky characters to peek through them!

And so, Spooky Vintage Farmhouse was born.

The Fabrics

For this version, I used Hauntingly Yours by Gia Graham for White Owl Textiles. The collection had just the combination I was looking for: playful Halloween prints with plenty of opportunities for fussy cutting.

The purple is Confetti Cotton in Unicorn by Riley Blake Designs.

Those Spooky Little Windows

The windows might be my favorite part of this quilt.

Vintage Farmhouse is a foundation paper-pieced pattern, which makes it easy to be very intentional about what appears in each window. I fussy-cut Halloween characters so that ghosts, goblins, cats, and other little surprises peek out from the houses.

You don't need to fussy cut your fabrics to make Vintage Farmhouse, but for this Halloween version, I couldn't resist!

About the Vintage Farmhouse Pattern

Vintage Farmhouse combines foundation paper-pieced house blocks with classic star blocks for a fresh take on a cozy farmhouse quilt.

The blocks are set on point, but don't let that scare you. I've designed the construction to make the on-point setting much easier to put together than it looks.

One of my favorite things about Vintage Farmhouse is how much the quilt changes depending on your fabric choices. Make cozy everyday farmhouses, spooky Halloween houses, Christmas cottages, or something completely your own.

The Quilting

Of course, a Halloween quilt needed Halloween quilting!

I quilted Spooky Vintage Farmhouse with Swirly Bats, a digital pantograph from Sew Shabby Quilting.

Look closely and you'll see little bats swirling their way across the houses and stars.

I used 40 wt. Glide thread in Amethyst.

A Trip to the Alaska State Fair

Spooky Vintage Farmhouse also made a trip to the Alaska State Fair this summer, where it earned a Second Place ribbon.

Now that it's home again, I'm happy to have it back where I can enjoy all those little spooky details!

Halloween is only one possibility.
